When she was growing up in Indonesia, Katrina never imagined that she would end up living in Australia. But she now lives in Melbourne with her husband and two small children.
Although her children do not yet go to school, Katrina decided she was going to make the most of education opportunities in Australia for herself, so she enrolled in a Certificate 3 English as a Second Language (ESL) class at Melbourne Polytechnic (formerly known as NMIT).
Her aim was not only to build her self-confidence, but to improve her English. "What I learned at Melbourne Polytechnic was not just English, but time management. This has helped me a lot. The computer and PowerPoint presentations were important too. They are used a lot in further study."
Once she finished Certificate 3 (ESL), Katrina, who enjoys cooking, wanted to study patisserie, but the class was full. Rather than wait at home, she enrolled in hospitality.
It’s been a big adjustment studying with native speakers, but she is enjoying it. She’s learning a lot, and she has just been offered some hospitality work during the Spring Racing Carnival.
Katrina says that she would recommend the Certificate 3 (ESL) course at Melbourne Polytechnic to others, especially people who want to go on to further study. For her it’s been an important step towards achieving her dreams. These days she’s very excited about life. She can see that she now has opportunities.
