Free TAFE courses

The free priority course list includes non-apprenticeship courses and courses that provide pathways to apprenticeships (also known as ‘pre-apprenticeships’).

Free priority courses lead to occupations in industries where there are likely to be more jobs. Some of them lead to work in key areas family violence prevention, rolling out the National Disability Insurance Scheme in Victoria and delivering our major infrastructure projects.

Job Trainer

If you're a school leaver, job seeker or young Victorian you may be eligible to study a free or low-fee course through either the Free TAFE or Job Trainer, a Victorian Government initiative. 

Melbourne Polytechnic Free TAFE and Jobtrainer courses can help you learn skills for jobs in demand. You can choose from a range of accredited diplomas, certificates, and short courses in areas like health, aged and disability care, IT and trades.

Skill Sets

The Victorian Government has announced a new range of short courses (Skill Sets) under the Jobtrainer initiative that is an immediate response to the skills shortages and workforce needs of Victoria.

If you are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, New Zealand citizen or asylum seeker, you may be eligible to study under Jobtrainer. Additionally, if you are:

  • 17 to 24 years old when the course starts; or
  • A job seeker of any age, where a job seeker is defined as a person who: holds a valid and current Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Veteran’s Gold Card; or is unemployed.
