Belinda Smeal

After a long and enjoyable career in the healthcare industry, Belinda Smeal was determined to keep working in hospitals, even after deciding she needed a change of pace.

The 52-year-old Sunbury resident recently completed her Certificate IV in Business Administration.

Luckily for Smeal, she had already secured a position at the Royal Melbourne Hospital as a ward clerk, before she’d even finished her Certificate III in Business Administration (Medical) in July.

“I love the atmosphere and the interaction with patients and staff. You’re helping people and doing something useful, but you don’t have anything to stress about. You can go home at the end of the day and forget about it,” she says.

Belinda says the Melbourne Polytechnic courses were more valuable than previous training she completed. “I did a medical receptionist course a few years back. But a course alone won’t help you. You need the experience as well. The course was more industry relevant and practical,” she says.

As part of her Certificate III in Business Administration (Medical), Belinda completed a work placement at the Western Hospital’s Centre for Education. “They would have kept me on if they had a position available. I would have been happy to continue working there. But then I was pretty chuffed to get an interview at the Royal Melbourne afterwards.”

As a ward clerk, Belinda works for the nursing manager and is responsible for patient admissions and discharges, clerical work and filing. A good working relationship is important to her and she enjoyed the supportive atmosphere among her peers on the course. On the job, she tends to be popular among her workmates “I like to build a rapport with the people I work with.”

Having previously worked in nursing, aged care and a pharmacy, Belinda also enjoys the scientific side of her job, and is following up her Melbourne Polytechnic courses with further study online. “I love the mental stimulation. That’s why I’m interested in doing the course on clinical coding. I see it as enhancing my possibilities.”
