After working as a freelance stylist and hairdresser, Domenica (Antonella) Di Bello decided it was time to pursue a more independent path by returning to study and establishing her own salon.
“I did an apprenticeship and became a hairdresser before having my son. During this break I knew that I wanted to open my own salon. I just figured that studying the highest qualification I could, would be a valuable asset to have in the industry.”
Having completed the Certificate IV in Hairdressing and Beauty in six months, Antonella is now running her own salon, Noi Colour Cut Style, in Raleigh Street, Essendon.
“The course gave me a boost of confidence which helped me to make the move from being a freelancer to stepping into the role of owner and creative director of Noi Colour Cut Style.”
While she admits that returning to study was a daunting idea, Antonella is now reaping the rewards.
“The practical side of the course was fine for me, given my experience, but tackling the assignments and coursework was a new challenge because I hadn’t studied for a few years.”
Throughout the course, Antonella was inspired and encouraged by her “amazing” teachers.
“One teacher was a particular inspiration to me, her name was Mimi. She really helped me a lot because I was feeling nervous about returning to study and that made a big difference.”
Antonella was so inspired by her teachers and the sense of personal achievement she experienced from completing the course that she found herself thinking about a new goal for the future.
“I’d like to go back and teach one day. It felt great to encourage other students to feel more confident in what they were doing and this really opened up a new door for me.”
She is now keen to encourage other experienced hairdressers to consider further training and says that there were plenty of tips and techniques that she could use in her own work.
“If you’re willing to put in one hundred percent, you’ll definitely get back more. Do it for yourself and your confidence! It’s all the little things you learn along the way that make a difference.”
