Your graduation

We hold a Melbourne Polytechnic graduation ceremony each year in May. If eligible to graduate, graduands will receive an invitation via email, to which an RSVP is required. Please ensure your email address is correct by completing the Personal Details Amendment Form and sending it to

Professional photographers will be available on the night and are not included in the graduation fee.

Wednesday 2 May and Thursday 3 May

Applying to graduate

All Melbourne Polytechnic students who are awarded for a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or a Higher Education Degree will automatically be invited. Students completing a certificate will receive their testamur in the mail when it is conferred.

Graduation information pack

All graduands who RSVP to attend the 2018 Graduation Ceremony will be sent a Graduation Information Pack via email along with their tickets. This will include all of the details needed to know about the ceremony such as how to get there, the exact location, the registration process, the schedule, food and the step by step process of what graduands will do when receiving an award.

At the ceremony

The ceremony takes approximately two hours. You will need to arrive early to register and pick up your graduation gown, please allow roughly four hours for the whole event. All these details will be in the Information Pack that is made available to graduands before the event.

Key times on the night

3pm – 3:30pm Graduands with a last name starting with A – M register and gown

3:30pm – 4pm Graduands with a last name starting with N – Z register and gown

4:30pm – 5:30pm Graduand Rehearsal in the Theatre
Please note that if you do not attend this rehearsal you won’t be able to participate in the ceremony.

5:30pm – 6:30pm Guests arrive, catering, entertainment and photo opportunities.

6:30pm Doors open

7pm Doors close and ceremony starts.


The cost for a graduand to attend is $90. This includes the following:

  • The graduand ticket
  • Two complimentary guest tickets
  • Complete academic regalia hire
  • All administrative costs
  • Music, canapés, and drinks
  • Graduation memento program
  • Ceremonial Melbourne Polytechnic cylinder

Additional guest tickets are available for purchase for $30 per person. These tickets are subject to availability and once sold out will not be available. All tickets are sent to the graduands email address along with the Graduation Information Pack closer to the date.


Children under ten years of age are not permitted to attend as past ceremonies have seen young children find the evening too long. Due to the theatre styled seating it will not be possible for parents and children to leave during the ceremony.


Attending the 2018 Melbourne Polytechnic Graduation Ceremony is via invitation only, and these are received via email. We request that students please RSVP whether coming or not coming.

Academic dress

A graduation ticket includes the cost of hiring a black graduation gown and coloured hood/stole which makes up the compete academic regalia. As this event is an official occasion, graduands and their guests are required to dress in semi-formal attire (no jeans, runners, sandals, casual singlets or thongs). Please note that there will be stairs that both guests and graduands will have to navigate, therefore appropriate footwear should be worn.


Event photographers will be present on the night to capture the atmosphere before, during and after the ceremony.

In addition, professional Set Graduation Photography will be available for purchase on the night. Graduands will need to complete the Photography Order Form and bring it along on the night. Photography Order Forms will be available on the night for those who did not bring one. Please note that payment for these photos will be received on the night by the photography staff, and can be paid via cash or eftpos.

Please note: By attending the 2018 Graduation Ceremony graduands and guests must accept that their image may be captured and used for future promotion of the event. If they do not wish for this to occur, they need to notify or event staff on the night

Important Information: 

If you are graduating with a Certificate I, II, III or IV, please note that you won’t be invited to attend this Graduation Ceremony. Your graduation certificate will be posted out to you. If your postal address or need to be updated, please use the Amend Personal Details form.

Return the completed form to the Melbourne Polytechnic Awards Officer (details on the form) before February. If you have not qualified for graduation, your department will contact you and let you know.

There is a non-refundable fee associated with attending the Graduation Ceremony.
