OSHC Health Insurance

What is OSHC?

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is health insurance for international students studying in Australia on a student visa.

Maintaining valid OSHC for the duration of your stay in Australia is a condition of your student visa. All international students, and any eligible dependants accompanying them to Australia, must have OSHC for the entire duration of their stay in Australia.

OSHC helps cover the cost of medical treatment and hospital care while you are living and studying in Australia.

Why do I need OSHC?

Healthcare in Australia can be expensive without insurance. OSHC helps protect you from unexpected medical costs and provides access to essential healthcare services while you are studying.

It is your responsibility to ensure your OSHC remains valid for the entire duration of your student visa. If your visa or study period is extended, you may need to extend your OSHC policy.

What does OSHC cover?

OSHC generally covers:

  • Visits to a doctor (GP)
  • Hospital treatment and accommodation
  • Emergency ambulance services
  • Some prescription medicines

The services covered may vary depending on your OSHC provider and policy. Please refer to your provider's website for full details of your cover.

What is not covered by OSHC?

OSHC may not cover:

  • Dental treatment
  • Optical services (glasses and contact lenses)
  • Physiotherapy
  • Other specialist or elective treatments

You may choose to purchase additional private health insurance if you require cover for these services.

How do I use my OSHC?

When visiting a doctor, medical clinic or hospital, present your OSHC membership card or digital card.

Depending on your provider and the healthcare service, you may:

  • Be billed directly through your OSHC provider; or
  • Pay for the service and submit a claim to receive a refund.

Contact your OSHC provider for information about:

  • Making a claim
  • Finding a doctor
  • Accessing emergency assistance
  • Updating your policy details
