Frequently Asked Questions

IELTS test results are valid for two years only. However, with some sub visas the Immigration Department may accept your IELTS results for a third year. Please note that after two years, the IELTS office will no longer be able to issue Test Report Forms.


To get your best possible score you may want to consider looking into the IELTS Preparation support tools and materials on offer (including writing). These materials will familiarise you with the types of questions you will get on the test day.

Yes. The two tests are different and are taken for different reasons such as immigration, education and/or employment.

The difference between the two testing modules are:

Academic Test – Test takers who wish to study at an undergraduate/postgraduate levels, as well as looking for professional registration.

General Training Test – Test takers who wish to migrate to an English speaking country, and want to study below a degree level.

It is the test taker’s responsibility to ensure they have selected the correct test module. If you are unsure, please check with the organisation who has asked you to take the test to determine what their requirements are.

At Melbourne Polytechnic all four test components will be conducted on the same day.

The Writing, Reading and Listening tests are held between 09:00 and 12:30. You must arrive at the centre by 08:00 on the test day to register.

Speaking interviews are held between 13:00 and 17:30 on the same day. Please ensure you are available between those times, as we cannot alter the speaking time.

If you live in regional areas (eg Mildura, Shepparton) please email us to ensure we allocate an early speaking time slot. Please note this is on a first come first serve basis and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request.

At the time of booking, as well on the day of the test, all test takers are required to have an original and valid passport. It is the only acceptable form of identification for IELTS in Australia. If you do not have a valid passport, please contact the IELTS office for further information before booking your test.

  • Passport – Original valid passports are accepted only. No passport, no test.
  • Confirmation emails – The final email will be sent 1 – 2 days before your test. Ensure you check your inbox, junk mail or spam folder. If you have not received an email, please contact our office before no later than 3:00 pm Friday (one day before your test). Print it, and bring it along.
  • Clear bottle of water – remove all labels and bottle must be see through.

Prohibited Items: mobile phones, watches, electronic devices and all stationery.

Cloaking of ALL personal belongings – Before the test you will be asked to leave all personal belongings in a separate room that will be locked. Melbourne Polytechnic will not be responsible loss or damage to valuable items. We encourage you NOT to bring such items with you.

Do not bring big jackets.

Do not bring pens, pencils these will be provided.

You may only cancel or change your test date and test details (venue / module) if you give the centre two weeks or more written notice.

The ‘Request for a refund / Test date transfer’ form is available from the Melbourne Polytechnic IELTS office or can be downloaded under IELTS Forms. Test takers are required to provide supporting documentation with their request.

Cancelling: Once all relevant forms are submitted, if approved, 75% of the test fee will be refunded. All cancellations will incur an administration fee of 25%.

Transferring: Requests for transfers submitted within the two weeks of their test date, will incur an administration fee of $35.00 (GST incl.) if approved.

Please note: Requests for changes to test date or test details may not always be possible and a cancellation may be offered instead.

If you are unable to attend your test due to a serious medical condition and can provide a medical certificate within five days of the test date, we’ll do our best to help you find a new test date. In some cases, you may qualify for a refund. However, if you are away on the test day with no prior notice, you may lose your full fee.

Test Takers may request an Enquiry on Result (EOR) process, if unhappy with their result.

This process typically takes between 2 – 21 days to complete, once back from remarking, all results will be posted out to test takers. The fee is $176.00, however if your score does change, the fee will be fully refunded. If there is no change, there is no refund.

To apply for an EOR, you can either come in person OR post in your application form. The IELTS Office is located at Melbourne Polytechnic, Building Q, Room 108, 41 Cramer Street, Preston 3072. Our trading hours and ‘Enquiry on Result’ form can be found on our website under Contact Us & IELTS Forms.

If coming in person, please bring your original Test Report Form and payment method. Either EFTPOS or Credit are acceptable forms of payment.

We recommend you use registered or express post for tracking purposes, as your test report form and payment is not covered by Melbourne Polytechnic if lost.

Your old TRF

Option 1:

Keep it with you until you hear from the office. If the result does NOT change you don’t need to do anything, you keep your original TRF. If the result changes you need to bring it to the office or send it via the post before we can give you the new TRF.

Option 2:

Send your Original TRF via post or come to the centre and hand it in person. We will either post your original TRF if the result does not change or issue you the new TRF if the result changes.

Please keep in mind that you only have 6 weeks from your test date to submit an enquiry on results. Any late application requests will not be accepted.

You need to complete the ‘Change of Address Form’, and either hand in at the office, post it out or email the office (PDF form only). All forms can be found on our website under IELTS Forms.

Alternatively, on the day of the test; you can ask the Test Day Supervisor for the appropriate form.

Please remember to notify our office if you have recently sat an IELTS test, as your details need be updated in the system prior to posting your test results

Test takers are issued one copy of their Test Result Form on the 13th day after the test. However, if you have misplaced, damaged or lost your test result form, please contact our office for further assistance.


Within the two-year validity of your test date, test takers are able to apply for up to 5 additional copies of their original certificate. These Test Report Forms can only be sent to universities, embassies, consulates etc and are not for your use.

Department of Home Affairs no longer accept original Test Report Forms, they only require your Test Report Form number. This can be found on your original copy at the bottom of the result sheet.

The ‘Request for Additional Test Report Form’ is available from the Melbourne Polytechnic IELTS office or can be downloaded from our website under IELTS Forms.

We use standard delivery when posting Test Report Forms within Australia. If you want to use a registered envelope, you are required to supply the envelope when you submit your ‘Request for Additional Test Report Form’. The A4 Registered Envelope can be bought from any Australia Post Office.

Test takers wishing to send an additional Test Report Form overseas are required to supply the IELTS office with an overseas A4 registered envelope.

Please note: Additional test report forms are posted not emailed. Migrant agents and lawyers are not eligible to receive a copy, only registered organisations.

The Test centre makes every effort to cater for the special needs of test takers, to enable them to best understand questions and tasks and to give their answers. It is our aim for the language level of all test takers, irrespective of disability, to be assessed fairly and objectively.

Please contact the office for further information or email your medical documentation before booking a test. Test takers with special needs are advised to apply between six weeks and three months in advance to enable appropriate arrangements to be made. Test takers are not able to request special consideration when booking a test less than three weeks prior to the actual test date. If you book a test without notifying the office, you MUST send your medical documentation within 24 hours of booking your test online for approval.

All test day complaints need to be made within 5 days of the test date by completing this form Complaint Form For Candidates. Complaints after this test date will not be accepted.

Your results will not be issued until your complaint is resolved.
