Skills and Learning Recognition categories at Melbourne Polytechnic

There are two categories of skills recognition:

1. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognise skills and knowledge you have acquired previously to gain credit for a full qualification or its units of competency or modules.

You may have acquired recognisable skills and knowledge through:

  • Your work experience
  • Voluntary work
  • Informal training
  • Social or domestic activities

RPL process:

  1. Interview with a Skills Recognition Assessor (a Melbourne Polytechnic trainer, academic or industry expert) to determine range and extent of evidence required.
  2. Gather and submit evidence of your experience.
  3. Assessor reviews evidence and may request further information.
  4. Assessor compares evidence with the assessment criteria of the units of competency, modules or full qualification.
  5. Results recorded on your student record and you are informed of the outcome in writing.

2. Credit Transfer

Apply for credit towards a Melbourne Polytechnic course for previously successfully completed same or equivalent units of competency or modules completed at another educational institution.

Credit Transfer process:

  1. Gather evidence and your statement of attainment for previous qualification or course.
  2. Interview with a Skills Recognition Assessor (a Melbourne Polytechnic trainer, academic or industry expert) to apply for Credit Transfer.
  3. Assessor determines suitability of evidence for Credit Transfer and completes your Skills Recognition Application.
  4. Assessor verifies and approves credit
  5. Units of competency or modules approved for Credit Transfer are recorded on your student record and you are informed of the outcome in writing.
