Dr Adam Starr

Adam is a composer and multi-instrumentalist, performing on guitar, bass, euphonium, voice, and percussion. He lectures at Melbourne Polytechnic in composition, arranging and performance. Adam composes for both film and the concert hall, writing for ensembles of different sizes. His PhD in Composition explored issues of indeterminacy, metric modulation, and 'interference'.

Adam has been lecturing in the Bachelor of Music degree since 2011. He encourages his students to practice creativity, to think about their unique musical vision and to find the best ways to articulate it. His approach to education and creation is informed by combining the best of his experiences as a postgraduate student, with over 20 years of working as a composer and performer in the music industry. Adam feels privileged to support the musical and educational journeys of his students.

Adam has a PhD (Composition, University of Melbourne), a Master of Music (Composition for the Screen) from the Royal College of Music (UK) and a Master of Music (Composition) from the University of Melbourne. He has performed at festivals in Europe, Asia and America with different ensembles.

Adam’s most recent film score was for Revenge, a feature-length documentary produced by the BBC (2023).
