In 1920-21 the average salary of an urban worker was approximately 189 pounds per annum but by 1928 this had fallen to 179 pounds per annum.
During his regular walk from his Kew residence ‘Raheen’ to the Catholic Cathedral in East Melbourne, Catholic Archbishop, Dr. Daniel Mannix, once stopped to chat to boys from Collingwood Technical School as he passed the CTS playground in Johnston Street. After some conversation the Archbishop asked the group of boys if they knew who he was. “Yes”, replied one of the boys, “I know Sir … You’re the bloke who drives Garson’s hearse.” (From a letter written in 1960 by former CTS Principal, Alex Strang, to CTS Principal, J.V. Shelton.)
