Loran’s fast track to a new career in waterproofing

After working as a tree planter, outdoor adventure guide and qualified rope access technician, Loran Paulich was looking for a way to build a long-term career while continuing to work. That's when he discovered the Certificate III in Construction Waterproofing CPC31420 at Melbourne Polytechnic. 

At 32, Loran needed a course that would fit around his existing work commitments and help him move quickly into a new industry. The practical, hands-on nature of the course stood out immediately. 

The course's condensed delivery meant Loran could gain his qualification in just a few months while remaining available for work, making it an attractive option compared to longer training programs.  

Initially, Loran saw waterproofing as a valuable addition to his rope access (a safe method for working at heights with harnesses and equipment) qualifications, helping him access more opportunities within the construction industry. But there was another reason he was drawn to the trade. 

Having lived in rental properties across Australia and New Zealand, he had seen the consequences of poor waterproofing firsthand, including mould and leaking buildings. He wanted to understand why these problems occurred and learn how to prevent them for future homeowners and renters.  

Once he started studying, Loran quickly found himself immersed in the practical side of the course. Learning from industry-experienced teachers Roeland and Adrian, he developed a detailed understanding of waterproofing systems, industry standards and the issues that can arise when work isn't completed correctly.  

One of the highlights of the course was the opportunity to build and waterproof his own training modules. 

Being able to complete the detailing work, apply waterproofing systems and then stand back and see the finished result gave Loran a real sense of achievement. He also appreciated having the time to learn properly, refine his skills and correct mistakes along the way. 

"My favourite parts of the course were the hands-on waterproofing days of building our own modules to waterproof. I loved the detailing work prior to waterproofing and the chance to look at a finished outcome at the end of it, looking at your work with pride."  

Beyond the classroom, Loran was inspired by opportunities to engage with industry experts. A standout moment came when he attended an evening presentation by Byron from Complibuild, who spoke about improving standards across the waterproofing industry. 

The presentation reinforced one of the key reasons Loran had enrolled in the course in the first place: a desire to contribute to better building outcomes and help address common waterproofing issues across the industry. 

Although Loran originally planned to use the qualification to complement his rope access career, his experience studying waterproofing sparked a genuine passion for the trade. 

With support from his teachers, he successfully secured work in the industry after graduating. His commitment throughout the course, combined with the relationships he built with teaching staff, helped connect him with employment opportunities and industry networks. 

Loran first worked as a waterproofing inspector with Waterproofing Integrity, where he gained valuable experience assessing waterproofing projects and applying his knowledge of Australian Standards in real-world situations. Working alongside experienced industry professionals further strengthened his technical skills and understanding of the sector. 

However, seeing the challenges and defects that can occur on-site inspired him to develop his practical skills even further. 

Not content to remain solely in inspection, Loran decided he wanted to master the craft itself. An opportunity to join Schaefer Waterproofing allowed him to do that. Today, he uses the skills he learned at Melbourne Polytechnic every day on the job.  

Loran continues to build on his knowledge through additional professional development and industry training, maintaining connections with experts and keeping up to date as the industry evolves. 

Now working with Schaefer Waterproofing, he is focused on continuing to grow his skills and contribute to the company's success. 

Looking ahead, Loran hopes to take on a leadership role and help expand the business while continuing to refine his expertise in waterproofing. 

For Loran, what began as an opportunity to expand his qualifications soon evolved into a career he loves and a future full of opportunities.
