International student Patrick Theodore Co from the Philippines started his career out in marketing but soon realised that his passion and future was in the information technology sector.

Taking the step to study at Melbourne Polytechnic

I wanted to follow my passion and my dreams. My first degree was in marketing and I was employed in both retail and sales. But I wanted to study Information Technology because it is a growing industry with many opportunities. I selected Melbourne Polytechnic because it has a great community that supports both International and Australian students alike. They encourage students to do what they love, and I am amazed by their support.

Life as an international student

My experience of Melbourne Polytechnic is wonderful. I completed my Diploma in Information Technology at the campus before pursuing my degree, and from the very beginning everyone has been helpful. I met SLAM on the first day of my orientation. They provide the much needed support to international students, and they also organise many events where we can make friends and socialise. My lecturers and tutors have been very supportive as well, and I must mention the library staff, who are always ready to lend a hand.

Career path

I believe that studying at Melbourne Polytechnic gives you an advantage because many of the lecturers are from the industry and they have practical experience and knowledge. They advise you on where you can start, which will be helpful for future employment and career development. Melbourne has many IT companies and I hope to find employment once I complete my degree. I participate in networking events so that I can build my contacts in the industry as well. Never too late to learn I believe it is never too late to further your knowledge and experiences. Melbourne Polytechnic provides a good opportunity for you to pursue your dream career. It builds your confidence to do what you love and also to create your environment.

The Melbourne experience

Melbourne is a beautiful city, which is multicultural and diverse. You can meet people from different countries and share your culture and experiences with them too. Melbourne is a great place to connect with people.

One of my most pleasant experiences is how you can shop for your groceries without any security personnel around. In the supermarkets in Melbourne, there is a cashier who will help you, but you could also opt for self-check-out. I was amazed at how the supermarkets trust their customers to do the right thing.

Never too late to learn
