Feisal's Australian Story: from Somalia to enrolment day

New student Feisal enrols at Melbourne Polytechnic

Enrolling at Melbourne Polytechnic is usually a straightforward, everyday experience. But for new student Feisal, it was anything but ordinary.

His recent enrolment at our Preston campus was captured by an ABC TV film crew, documenting the milestone as part of an upcoming Australian Story feature.

Feisal’s journey to Melbourne Polytechnic is both extraordinary and deeply moving.

In 2016, Feisal and his mother, Naima, fled their home in Somalia after she was attacked by extremists, resulting in the loss of her hand. Determined to build a safer and brighter future for her son, Naima took Feisal to Kenya, where they spent 9 years waiting to be resettled.

The pair arrived in Melbourne last June through the Australian Government’s Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot (CRISP) program, which supports refugees to settle into local communities with the help of volunteers.

Feisal and Naima were supported by volunteer group, Hope for Eden, who assisted them to access accommodation, Centrelink and medical services, including starting the process to secure a prosthetic hand for Naima.

Capturing the big day

Securing a place in Melbourne Polytechnic’s Community Services program marks a significant milestone for Feisal. It represents a shift from survival to stability - and the opportunity to build a strong future through education.

Feisal was all smiles as the film crew followed him through the enrolment process.

“This means everything to me. I’m so happy to be here.”

He was warmly welcomed by enrolment team member, Jordan, who guided him through the process and helped him feel at ease. Jordan noted Feisal’s enthusiasm and curiosity, with plenty of thoughtful questions throughout.

The enrolment culminated with Feisal having his photo taken for his student card - which he proudly held up for the cameras.

Feisal’s story will air on Australian Story in early July 2026; around the same time he begins his studies at our Preston campus.

We wish him every success as he embarks on this exciting new chapter.
