Backing the tradespeople of the future

The impact of these scholarships is already clear in the words of this year’s recipients.

Robert Caspar Daw said, “Wow, what a great start to my week. Thank you so much for your support, it really means a lot. This is giving me more motivation to do what I love.”

For Harrison Lou, the support has created opportunities he otherwise wouldn’t have access to, noting that “without this grant I wouldn’t have the means to pursue a passion project of mine and I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity.”

Their experiences reflect how meaningful this assistance can be for students building their future in the timber and construction industry.

Honouring a legacy of craftsmanship and community

Created through the generosity of the families behind Provans Timber & Hardware, these scholarships honour the legacy of David Provan and his long-standing support of trade education. Continuing this tradition, the awards recognise and support emerging carpentry, joinery and cabinet making students who demonstrate dedication, skill and a strong commitment to their future careers.

David Provan, great-grandson of the founder of Provans Timber & Hardware, explains, “The members of the Provan family are proud to continue supporting students who are building their futures in carpentry, joinery and cabinet making trades. The scholarships and annual award are an enduring way for us to honour the memory of the late David Provan, who founded Provans Timber and Hardware in 1903. The annual scholarships provide recipients with financial assistance to purchase tools of the trade, while the David Provan & Sons annual award allows the Provan and Rosenberg families to recognise a student who has strived for excellence and demonstrated outstanding achievement in their chosen discipline. It is incredibly rewarding to see new talent emerging each year and we warmly congratulate the worthy recipients of the 2025 scholarships and annual award.”

As we celebrate this year’s recipients, the ongoing commitment of the Provan and Rosenberg families continues to inspire and uplift the next generation of tradespeople - helping them gain the tools, confidence and recognition they need to succeed.

Supporting connection, diversity and the future of trades

Since their introduction in 2021, these scholarships have aimed not only to ease the financial pressures of training, but also to promote greater diversity across the construction trades—including encouraging more women to pursue careers in carpentry, joinery and cabinet making.

This year’s awards were announced at the Carpentry Australia Roadshow at the Heidelberg campus, where around 70 attendees—from current students to industry professionals—came together for demonstrations, advice and networking. The event celebrated student achievement while strengthening the vital connections between apprentices and the broader industry.

By giving learners direct access to employers, suppliers and experienced tradespeople, it offered meaningful opportunities for mentoring, career guidance and professional growth.

Together, the event and the scholarships play a crucial role in building confidence, expanding pathways and nurturing the next generation of skilled craftspeople who will shape the future of Melbourne’s trades sector.
