Following their dreams of working in the music industry, Luca Munoz is turning ambition into reality through the Bachelor of Songwriting and Music Production at Melbourne Polytechnic.
Luca moved to Australia from Colombia at 16, after graduating earlier than most. They planned a gap year to explore a new country, but quickly realised their passion for music was calling them toward study and a career in the industry.
Music has been a lifelong dream. “Where I’m from, there aren’t many courses for contemporary music,” they explain. When researching options, Luca found many institutions either didn’t accept their previous study or were prohibitively expensive — until they discovered Melbourne Polytechnic. An information session confirmed it was the right fit.
Coming from a musical family, Luca grew up surrounded by music, with their mum singing in the church choir. What they lacked were role models actively working in the industry. Studying at Melbourne Polytechnic has opened doors to industry connections — from small record label operators to songwriters and producers. Recently, Luca even performed their music at a record label launch for a fellow songwriting alumni student.
Since starting their degree, Luca has produced three songs and has another EP’s worth of music ready. “Before joining, I had never produced a song or even recorded one. Now I’ve made three and counting,” they say. Free access to studios and equipment has been invaluable, along with the supportive, like-minded community of students and staff.
For anyone ready to turn their music dreams into reality, the Bachelor of Songwriting and Music Production offers the tools, opportunities, and support to start producing and releasing music. Luca’s journey shows what’s possible when talent meets the right guidance.
