For Atticus, studying in Australia was about much more than earning a qualification. It was an opportunity to broaden their horizons. To build meaningful connections. And to gain the confidence to pursue a career anywhere in Australia.
Now preparing to graduate with a Bachelor of Accounting, Atticus has embraced every opportunity available at Melbourne Polytechnic. They have volunteered, mentored fellow students, and contributed to an industry-led project supporting international students. Along the way, they discovered that a supportive learning environment can make all the difference.
Atticus was finishing a Diploma in Malaysia when they began considering their next steps.
They knew they wanted to continue studying and complete a bachelor's degree, but they weren't sure where that journey would take them.
With their brother already living and studying in Australia, the idea of studying overseas began to feel achievable.
"I knew I wanted to do more study and complete my Bachelor; however, I didn't know where," Atticus says.
After researching their options, Australia stood out as a place where they could continue their education while experiencing a new culture and way of life.
When comparing institutions, Atticus was looking with a particular idea in mind, somewhere they could easily feel comfortable and safe. As an international student moving away from family, it was important to find an environment that felt welcoming, supportive and manageable.
"Melbourne Polytechnic has smaller classrooms, so you feel like you're having more one-to-one time with the lecturers," they say.
That personal approach to learning became one of the biggest advantages of studying at Melbourne Polytechnic. Rather than feeling like just another student in a large lecture theatre, Atticus was able to build genuine relationships with their educators and classmates.
"The teachers know you and you get to know them as well."
The campus community they experienced was another pleasant addition.
"Something that has been surprising and really great is the community that is already here on campus."
For Atticus' family in Malaysia, knowing there was a strong support network in place provided additional peace of mind.
For Atticus, one of the highlights of studying at Melbourne Polytechnic has been the support they received from their lecturers.
What stands out most is the commitment educators show towards helping students achieve their potential.
"I remember the Head of Program saying they are here to help students succeed, not fail. They genuinely want you to succeed and score higher, not just pass."
Atticus says that commitment is reflected in the way lecturers engage with students, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical support throughout their studies.
While studying accounting, Atticus actively looked for opportunities to become involved in campus life.
Through volunteering with Melbourne Polytechnic's international student community and serving as a peer mentor, they developed leadership skills, expanded their professional network, and built connections with students from diverse backgrounds.
These experiences ultimately led to an opportunity to join the student advisory board for Safe Down Under, a digital resource designed to help international students understand and navigate Australia's healthcare system.

The project was developed collaboratively by international students and healthcare professionals to provide clear, accessible information about physical health, mental health and healthcare services in Australia.
For international students adjusting to life in a new country, the website addresses common concerns about accessing healthcare, understanding costs, and knowing where to seek support.
One of the most valuable aspects of the Safe Down Under project was the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals, outside their field of study.
The role demonstrated how extracurricular opportunities can help students build transferable skills and contribute meaningfully to their communities, regardless of their area of study.
As graduation approaches, Atticus is exploring career opportunities across Australia.
While their immediate goal is to work in finance or accounting, studying at Melbourne Polytechnic has shown them that career pathways are often broader than expected.
"After studying, I have a good idea of all the pathways, and there is more than I thought."
Atticus is also continuing to make use of Melbourne Polytechnic's support services, including career resources and library facilities, as they prepare for the next stage of their professional journey.
For other international students considering studying in Australia, Atticus believes Melbourne Polytechnic's smaller classes, supportive educators, volunteering opportunities and strong community make it an ideal place to learn and build professional connections.
"The community here has been really important," they say.
