Melbourne Polytechnic’s Clean Economy Skills Labs are delivering tangible impact by bringing industry and education together to build the workforce capabilities for Victoria’s net zero and circular economy transition.
Funded by the Victorian Government, the Skills Labs represent a targeted investment in the future - testing new, agile approaches to workforce development that respond directly to emerging industry demand.
At the core of the initiative is a collaborative model that brings educators, industry partners, experts and innovators together to co-design learning experiences. As lead TAFE for the Circular Design and Manufacturing and Residential Building and Construction Skills Labs, Melbourne Polytechnic is working closely with partner TAFEs, industry and government to trial scalable solutions that strengthen the state’s transition to a clean economy.
Beyond training, this approach is reshaping how workforce capability is built, ensuring industry can innovate, compete and grow in a changing economy.
Significant progress has been made in the Circular Design and Manufacturing Skills Lab, where new programs are already delivering real-world impact.
The Circular Design Springboard micro-credential, developed in partnership with Holmesglen Institute, The Gordon and Northern Victoria Institute of TAFE, is equipping learners with practical skills through industry engagement, site visits and case studies.
Early feedback suggests these practical experiences are strengthening understanding of how circular economy principles can be applied across sectors.
“Creating a platform that connects industry with education in a meaningful way is a powerful example of leadership and commitment to strengthening Australia’s manufacturing future. Placing sustainability at the core of that journey is particularly impactful, and it’s encouraging to see this level of investment in building practical capability across the sector.” Zaidee Jackson, Sustainability & Compliance Manager, Ball & Doggett.
Complementing this, the Circular Design Accelerator is taking learning one step further. By embedding educators and learners within a live manufacturing environment, the program is identifying practical opportunities to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency and unlock innovation - directly supporting business productivity and sustainability outcomes.
The Residential Building and Construction Skills Lab is also moving into delivery, with a strong focus on transforming one of Victoria’s most critical sectors.
Melbourne Polytechnic is piloting a new Sustainable Home Construction course in partnership with the Sustainable Builders Alliance, Holmesglen Institute, Chisholm Institute, TAFE Gippsland and the Future of Housing Construction Centre of Excellence. It equips learners with the knowledge and skills required to deliver affordable, compliant and net zero homes while encouraging greater collaboration between builders, designers, tradespeople and educators.
The pilot is already generating valuable insights into how vocational education can support housing transformation and accelerate the adoption of sustainable building practices across Victoria.
The next phase of the Skills Labs will focus on refining and scaling these initiatives, expanding industry participation and strengthening educator capability.
Beyond individual programs, the Labs are generating transferable models, tools and approaches that can be shared across the Victorian TAFE Network. This ensures the benefits of the investment extend beyond pilot projects, enabling the broader sector to respond more quickly and effectively to emerging workforce needs.
Industry pilots, collaborative development and cross-sector partnerships will continue throughout 2026, informing future workforce strategies across industries critical to the clean economy transition.
The Skills Labs are delivering long-term value by helping businesses access the skills needed to adopt new technologies, reduce emissions and embrace circular business models.
This investment in capability is strengthening industry productivity, innovation and competitiveness, while creating new opportunities for learners and communities.
Ultimately, Melbourne Polytechnic’s Clean Economy Skills Labs are demonstrating what is possible when government, industry and education work in genuine partnership.
