After moving from Iran to Australia two years ago, Mahnaz Mohammadi was looking for more than just a course. She wanted to build a meaningful future, one that reflected her values, her interests and her desire to make a positive impact.
With a background in agricultural engineering, Mahnaz had originally taken a different academic path. But she discovered her passion for working with children when she began teaching English back home. That early experience opened her eyes to the joys of supporting children’s learning and development, and it eventually led her to enrol in the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care CHC30121 at Melbourne Polytechnic.
Mahnaz was first introduced to Melbourne Polytechnic when she enrolled in a short English as an Additional Language (EAL) course. She was impressed not only by the quality of teaching but also by the warm and welcoming environment. It quickly became clear to her that she wanted to continue studying here.
She chose early childhood education because of her strong interest in working directly with people and her desire to support children’s wellbeing from an early age.
“I really love to have a positive impact on children's lives, and I felt like I could start doing that sooner. It’s a satisfying job, I really like it,” Mahnaz said.
What stood out most during her training was the dedication and care shown by her teachers. She felt supported in a way she hadn’t expected, not just academically, but personally as well.
“I had the best teacher I’ve ever had in my whole life,” she shared. “Really knowledgeable, no old details, very modern knowledge. Always available and so patient. This was something I needed, and I didn’t know I needed it until I had it.”
Mahnaz also embraced the social side of student life. Through student hub activities and shared learning experiences, she found herself part of a strong, supportive community. Her classmates became close friends, many of whom were on similar journeys, building new lives, careers and friendships in a new country.
After completing her Certificate III, Mahnaz secured her first-ever job at the same organisation where she completed her placement. The experience has not only helped her develop professionally but has also given her a sense of independence.
“Now, I’m more confident and I can communicate with others easily. This is my first job and my first time earning money. I can be independent,” she said.
Keen to keep learning and growing, Mahnaz has already enrolled in the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care CHC50121 and plans to continue on to the Bachelor. She’s excited about her future and committed to working in a field that supports the wellbeing of children and their families.
“As an educator I can now focus on the children's wellbeing and then teach them things,” she said.
Both the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care CHC30121 and the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care CHC50121 are available through Free TAFE at Melbourne Polytechnic. These courses are part of the Victorian Government’s Free TAFE Priority Pathways, which means eligible students can complete both qualifications tuition-free and gain a clear pathway into meaningful work in the sector.
Mahnaz’s story is a powerful reminder of how education can unlock purpose, community and personal growth. With the right support, it’s possible to create a life and a career that reflects who you are and what matters to you.
If you’re passionate about supporting children and want to make a real difference in their lives, studying early childhood education at Melbourne Polytechnic could be the right path for you.
