Melbourne Polytechnic brought together students and industry professionals for an Engineering, Building and Construction Industry Engagement Event, creating valuable connections and job opportunities.
Held at the Preston Campus on 7 May 2026, and delivered by the Skills and Jobs Centre, the event attracted more than 130 attendees, including students, prospective students, graduates and representatives from 12 organisations across the sector.
For many students, the hardest part of starting a career is taking that first step from study into employment. While they may have the technical skills, they often lack industry connections, confidence or a clear understanding of employer expectations.
This event aimed to address that gap by giving students direct access to industry and real conversations about what industry looks like and how to kick-start their careers.
Through presentations, a Q&A session and a networking expo, participants had the chance to hear directly from employers, ask questions and build connections.
Expert speakers included a representative from AJM Joint Venture, who shared insights into major infrastructure delivery through their work on the Suburban Rail Loop, as well as a Helios Infrastructure representative, who offered a practical ‘day in the life’ perspective on working in engineering, building and infrastructure.
Graduates also shared their experiences moving from study into employment, giving current students insight into possible career pathways.
The event had clear results. Students reported a better understanding of career options and what employers are looking for, along with increased confidence in approaching industry. Many were able to make direct connections with employers, with more than 70 per cent of surveyed participants saying they had meaningful conversations with industry representatives.
Employers also saw value in the event, noting the strong engagement and professionalism of Melbourne Polytechnic students. Several employers encouraged students to apply for current job opportunities, and 2 organisations have since committed to taking on student placements.
Overall, the event highlighted the importance of bringing education and industry together in a practical way. By giving students direct access to employers and real-world insights, Melbourne Polytechnic is helping build a stronger pipeline of job-ready graduates for the engineering, building and construction sectors.
