For Nebi, studying at Melbourne Polytechnic wasn’t just about starting a new career, it was about gaining stability, boosting his confidence and paving the way for a brighter future.
Before enrolling in the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) CPC50220, Nebi had studied personal training and worked part-time in both the fitness and logistics industries. While these roles kept him busy, they didn’t offer the long-term direction or satisfaction he was looking for.
Nebi often found himself helping friends and family with small building projects. It was something he enjoyed — and something he was naturally good at. Over time, he realised it was more than just a hobby, and that working in construction could offer real career potential.
He decided to enrol at Melbourne Polytechnic. What stood out to him early on was how different the learning experience felt compared to other providers. The access to experienced teachers, in-person learning and practical application of theory made a lasting impression.
“Real-life materials and scenarios are used for everything. They teach by sharing their own experiences,” he said.
Nebi found that both staff and fellow students contributed to a positive and collaborative environment. Teachers brought real industry knowledge to the classroom and went above and beyond to support students.
“They are more like friends, we feel welcome. It’s a collaborative environment, and that has assisted my learning experience,” he said.
Studying at Melbourne Polytechnic has also helped Nebi reconnect with a deeper interest in construction.
“I’ve always liked construction and being able to study here has brought up those feelings that I think I had forgotten about,” Nebi said. “I'd love to build myself a house one day, that would be cool.”
He also says the experience has changed how he thinks about the future and what he’s capable of.
“I have widened my horizons and have a different perspective on life. I’ve been equipped with the foundation; I’ll feel more confident in life,” he said.
The Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) CPC50220 is available to eligible students through Free TAFE, making it more accessible for those wanting to gain practical skills and industry knowledge without the financial barrier.
Now planning to continue with the Diploma of Building and Construction (Management) CPC50320, Nebi is focused on developing his skills and building a long-term career. He’s excited by the opportunities ahead and ready to take them on.
