A balanced ledger of skills

Our course provides you with the critical skills and knowledge you need to become a registered tax agent and an assistant accountant. It also provides an alternate pathway to the Bachelor of Accounting for students who have not completed secondary schooling in Australia.

Employment outcomes

This program will give you some of the educational units required by the Tax Practitioners board to permit registration as a Tax Agent.

Satisfactory completion of the Diploma of Accounting entitles you to join the IPA, one of the three peak accounting bodies representing accountants in Australia.

You will be qualified to work in the following areas:

  • Preparing financial statements
  • Managing small teams
  • Developing business plans
  • Preparing management accounting reports

Assessment

Assessment consists of classroom testing, assignments, presentations, group work, and case studies. A total of six core units and five elective units must be completed successfully to attain this qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning

You can seek RPL where your work or qualifications of an advanced and related nature have been undertaken. Academic Credit is granted on a case-by-case basis, according to our Academic Credit policy and associated procedures. Applications for Academic Credit will be assessed by relevant Melbourne Polytechnic academics and where appropriate, industry experts.

Materials

You will be required to purchase textbooks. A book list will be provided at enrolment. Our trainers will provide all additional materials. You are also expected to have access to a computer. Computers are available in Melbourne Polytechnic’s computer labs and library if you do not have a computer at home.

Completion of the below six core units from the Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping (FNS40217) or evidence of equivalent competency through recognition of prior learning (RPL).

  • FNSACC312 Administer subsidiary accounts and ledgers
  • FNSACC408 Work effectively in the accounting and bookkeeping industry
  • FNSACC416 Set up and operate a computerised accounting system
  • FNSTPB401 Complete business activity and instalment activity statements
  • FNSTPB402 Establish and maintain payroll systems

Academic: Australian Year 12 equivalency
English: Academic IELTS 5.5 with no individual band below 5.0, Pearson PTE Academic 42 overall with no individual communicative skill below 36, or Melbourne Polytechnic recognised equivalency.
