This course will equip you with knowledge and skills to accomplish the design, presentation and documentation process for residential and commercial building projects.

The course focuses around the idea of ‘the simulated office’ with a project based delivery structure where you will apply the knowledge gained to projects as you progress through the course. Classes mix hands-on sketching and design work with theory and building documentation drawings.

Industry connections and resources

This course is recognised by the Building Designers Association of Victoria, and by the Building Practitioners Board as the pre-requisite qualification for application to become a registered practitioner within Victoria.
Note: practical industry experience is also required.

The course is also an excellent stepping stone to other qualifications in fields such as architecture, project management, town planning, or interior design.

The department uses up-to-date computer-aided programs to ensure you are working in line with industry needs and teachers focus on your progress throughout the course, providing quality personal attention to ensure you are industry ready.

Pathways to further study

Melbourne Polytechnic provides seamless pathways towards higher qualifications. Successful completion of this course will provide 9 subjects/1.5 years credit into the HEBBE Bachelor of the Built Environment.

Career Pathways

This course opens the door to a huge variety of employment opportunities, including working as a team leader or project administrator with architects, builders or building designers. You will also have the ability to run your own drafting office, or work in the building management department of large commercial enterprises or government departments.

Skills Recognition

You can seek Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where your work experience or qualifications of an advanced and related nature have been undertaken. RPL is individually assessed based on evidence submitted by the student to the teaching department. Applications for RPL will be assessed by relevant Melbourne Polytechnic trainers, academics and where appropriate, industry experts.

Students may be eligible for Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding.

This qualification aligns with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 6.
