Advance your food production skills

If you already work in a production or production support role, for example, packaging, machine operations and bottling, you can advance your skills with Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate II in Food Processing FBP20117. If you are a young person with an intellectual disability, Melbourne Polytechnic’s individualised attention will help you learn the skills to join a booming industry that is predicted to grow by another 12% in the next five years. You’ll learn in the classroom and on the job through work placement opportunities. You’ll work in Melbourne Polytechnic’s commercial kitchen, assist in catering for functions and prepare food for sale in our produce shop. Personal management, teamwork and communication skills will set you up for positive outcomes and a strong future in the hospitality workforce.

At Melbourne Polytechnic, our qualified careers advisors and educators will develop a customised program tailored to your skills and goals. You will improve your numeracy, literacy, language and teamwork skills, alongside developing work-ready skills for the food processing sector. You will learn about cleaning and maintaining kitchens and equipment, hygiene and food safety, basic food preparation and presentation and venue set-up. Melbourne Polytechnic’s unique industry partnerships offer hospitality field trips - plus, our own industry-standard kitchens have been used by Masterchef and the Great Australian Bake Off. You’ll have the opportunity to gain real-life experience before you graduate, with 300 hours of practical placement, followed by an evaluation to determine your strengths, weaknesses and future goals. Your teachers will work with you at the end of the program, preparing an action plan to follow once the course is complete and assisting with active job searching. Best of all, class sizes are limited to ten students, so you’ll receive individual attention.

The Certificate II in Food Processing FBP20117 is designed for application in supervised environments where the work is intuitive, but has basic problem solving requirements. This course is the first step towards a career in the wide world of hospitality. You may gain employment at entry level in the hospitality industry as a kitchen hand, an events assistant and or a food production assistant. You might also be able to continue to study for higher qualifications to achieve your hospitality dream - whether you want to be a butcher, a baker or a breadmaker.

Concession fees are charged at 20 per cent of the standard fees for enrolments in Certificate I to IV courses. To be eligible students must meet Skills First eligibility criteria and present a valid:

  • Commonwealth Health Care card, or
  • Pensioner Concession card, or
  • Any dependent spouse or dependent child of one of the above cardholders, or
  • Veterans Gold card.

The following groups are eligible for concession fees from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma level:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • Asylum Seekers and victims of human trafficking

Additional expenses

The Student Services and Amenities Fee is charged at forty cents (40 cents) per student contact hour and is capped over a twelve (12) month period, effective from the enrolment date, to:

  • $250 for full fee-paying students; and
  • $175 for concession-paying students studying Certificate I, II, III, or IV.

Amenities fees are used to improve non-academic services including libraries, counselling services, student support, and recreational activities.

Next Steps

Work Education students are required to complete and return an application form and attend an informal interview to find the best suited class and discuss any additional requirements that may be needed to support studies. All future students who have submitted an application will be contacted via email to schedule the interview between August and December.

Students will need to also organise a Unique Student Identifier (USI) if they don't have one. This can be done online. Please bring this along to the interview session with any other documents and identification required which will be outlined to you in the email.
