Overview

Wine courses for beginners

For individuals new to wine study, this qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You'll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately and make food and wine pairings. The course was developed by the UK-based Wine Spirit Education Trust and is recognised internationally.

Upon successful completion, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

Who is the WSET Level 1 in Wine suitable for?

A beginner level introduction to wine suitable for those working in the wine retail, winemaking or hospitality sectors, or enthusiasts pursuing an interest in wine.

What you'll learn in this wine course for beginners

  • The main types and styles of wine
  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
  • How to store and serve wine
  • The principles of food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Assessment

Assessment is a closed-book, face-to-face exam comprising 30 multiple-choice questions. This qualification is regulated by Ofqual.

Upon successful completion, you will be issued a Level 1 Award Certificate and lapel pin from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET).

WSET course sessions

Three evening sessions over three weeks:

  • Session 1 will be conducted via a Zoom virtual classroom.
  • Session 2 will be conducted via a Zoom virtual classroom.
  • Session 3 will be delivered face-to-face at our Melbourne Polytechnic Epping Campus. This session includes the written examination.

Transfers and Refunds

A refund or transfer is only possible if you apply at least 5 business days prior to the course commencing. A standard handling charge of 10% of the advertised course fee will be deducted from each refund. Requests for refunds or transfers made within five business days of the course start date will not be eligible.

Requirements

You must be 18 years or older.

You must read the WSET Specification document and the WSET Specific Policies prior to enrolling.

There are no other entry requirements for this qualification. No previous wine knowledge or wine tasting experience is required.
