NMIT would like to pay tribute to champion Australian jockey, Roy Higgins MBE, who passed away on 8 March after a short illness.
Back in August 1994, NMIT purchased an eroded piece of land in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and, with Roy’s help, established Northern Lodge, one of the finest educational thoroughbred breeding properties in Australia. Roy provided advice on the layout and fencing of the property, purchased mares and stallions, and was instrumental in placing NMIT as a significant player in the equine breeding industry.
NMIT’s Deputy CEO and Director of Programs, David Draper, says, “Roy was a greatly respected mentor and advisor at NMIT for 20 years. Along with closely assisting with the stud, he helped students and teachers with riding technique, horse handling and farriery. Roy had so much passion and pride for the staff, students and the stud. His knowledge and generosity will be greatly missed by all here at NMIT.”
On behalf of the many NMIT staff and students, past and present, who knew Roy, we say thank you and farewell.
