Skills Reconnect Program for Long-term Unemployed and Early School Leavers

11 Apr 2018

Long-term unemployed people often get stuck due to a double-whammy – they have an incomplete education and they haven’t had the opportunity to develop the skills required to successfully gain employment.

This particularly affects youth unemployed and early school leavers, who have not yet had the opportunity to develop the skills that employers expect in applicants.

Melbourne Polytechnic has been contracted to provide the Skills First Reconnect program in Banyule, Darebin, Moreland and Whittlesea to support high needs long-term unemployed people through the program’s case management approach.

“The program is fully funded by the Victorian government, and it provides a highly supported environment for the participants,” says Dalila Torres, Melbourne Polytechnic’s PaTH and Reconnect Coordinator. “We assess their learning and non-learning needs to develop a Learning and Support Plan, then we support them in completing an accredited course.”

“One of the most important elements is the practical experience the participants get. We use work placements to increase employability and increase their confidence.”

When in the program, participants get much more than just training and work experience. They are supported in developing short and long-term career goals and creating a resume, and their case manager meets with them monthly to provide support for up to 18 months.

Melbourne Polytechnic also provides the Youth Jobs PaTH program, which is delivered in partnership with Career Education Association of Victoria (CEAV). PaTH, or Prepare,

The course builds employment readiness and provides both a simulated work environment and real-life industry experience.

PaTH training is free to eligible 16-24 year old job seekers referred by their jobactive provider. For more information, email ua.ud1558913934e.cin1558913934hcety1558913934lopen1558913934ruobl1558913934em@no1558913934itara1558913934perpd1558913934nanoi1558913934tadnu1558913934of1558913934
