NMIT Wines Win Bronze

10 Dec 2013

Two of NMIT’s (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) wines have been awarded bronze medals at the Victorian wine show.

The winning wines were the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2012 Sangiovese. These wines, which are sold under the ‘Northern Estates’ label, are produced by NMIT’s staff and students.

Both of the winning wines are produced at NMIT’s Ararat vineyard and winery. Located in the heart of the Grampians wine region, the Ararat facilities make use of the regions excellent grape growing conditions.

“These competitions give us a great opportunity to benchmark against commercial wineries,” said Jeff Snape, NMIT wine operator. “It’s good to know that despite the winery being a learning environment, our students and staff are producing wines that compete at the highest level.”

NMIT manages three vineyards and operates two wineries. These facilities are practical learning areas where students enrolled in NMIT’s Winemaking and Viticulture courses are able to get involved in wine production.

NMIT has recently added a number of wines to its catalogue. The two award winning wines are among the five new varietals produced. The 2012 vintage is the first produced of these varieties.

The Victorian Wine Show is held at Mitchelton Winery in Nagambie over three days. It is one of Victoria’s premier wine events and attracts up to 1000 wines from around the state. It has been held annually since 1981.
