NMIT student first Australian Future Turf Manager

24 Mar 2014

Ben Matthews isn’t one to just let the grass grow under his feet; he actively manages the grass as part of his career as a Turf Manager at the Metropolitan Golf Club.

He recently completed his Diploma of Horticulture (Turf) at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) and did so well that he will be the first Australian participant in the Jacobsen Future Turf Managers’ Program in the US.

Participation in the Future Turf Managers’ Program occurs in the form of a scholarship provided by Jacobsen, the manufacturer of golf course maintenance equipment with plants in the USA and UK, which is awarded to the top performing student in the NMIT Turf Management course.

"I've always had a passion for golf; I grew up playing competitive golf. After doing work experience on a golf course, I fell in love with the turf industry,” said Ben.

Ben, who completed his Diploma of Horticulture (Turf) at NMIT while also working in his current turf management role at South Oakleigh's Metropolitan Golf Club, recognised the Jacobsen scholarship as a unique opportunity.

"I always knew that getting some international experience in the field would be really beneficial. The Future Turf Managers’ Program gives me some exposure to overseas practices, and is a unique opportunity to be part of something new."

The Future Turf Managers’ Program is a weeklong event that is held around May each year in the US, allowing the best and brightest in the field to learn about industry innovation, receive leadership development, and network with their peers.

NMIT is proud to offer its Turf Management students the chance to be the only Australian attendee at Jacobsen’s annual Future Turf Managers’ Program.
