NMIT ESL students meet with their local Federal MP Adam Bandt

08 Jun 2013

About eighty English as Second Language (ESL) students from NMIT's Collingwood campus met with their federal representative in the seat of Melbourne, Adam Bandt, MP, last week.

The opportunity arose when ESL teacher, Frances La Riccia, met Adam at a function and he offered to meet with students on campus to share his personal life journey and answer questions of interest.

A resident of Flemington, Adam has held the Federal seat of Melbourne for the Australian Greens Party since 2010. Prior to joining Federal politics, he held roles as a Barrister and a Solicitor for Melbourne law firm, Slater and Gordon.

Adam spoke to NMIT ESL students about issues of concern - such as dental care, cost of living changes and Centrelink.

He told students he proposes increases to the Newstart Allowance after spending a week trying to live on less than $250 and found it impossible to do so.

Adam kicked off the question and answer session by asking students, 'what would you do if you were Prime Minister for a day?'

Given his busy schedule, NMIT ESL students make the most of Adam's time on campus and were ready to ask plenty of questions about issues of concern to them in their daily lives.

Adam fielded questions on migrant unemployment, availability of public housing in his constituency and immigration matters.

He also explained the role of his Electorate Office and invited students to contact his office with specific issues for advice and support.

NMIT Program Coordinator - Foundation Studies, Anne Hannon said community engagement was an important way for students to develop their English language skills.

“Topics which are relevant to students are a great way for them to develop their language skills.

Adam's presentation enabled students to learn how government works, who makes decisions and how this affects people's lives.”
