NMIT teacher wins ABC Radio Derek Guille theme music competition

09 Aug 2011

NMIT (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) Music teacher, Niko Schauble, has won a competition run by 774 ABC Melbourne radio to write new theme music for its Evenings program.

Niko's entry was chosen out of almost 60 others to become the new theme for the Evenings show. The judges included current Evenings host, Derek Guille, ABC producer Andy Taylor and Australian National Academy of Music Artistic Director, Paul Dean.

An established musician and composer, Schauble has written scores for TV shows including Bed of Roses, Neighbours and Stingers, and has worked on films such as Eye of the Storm, which was recently screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival. He is currently writing commissioned music for the Western Australian Ballet.

Niko teaches subjects involving musical arrangement and writing film and TV scores in NMIT's Bachelor of Music at NMIT Fairfield, and also gives lessons in percussion.

His wife told him about the competition while he was working in Berlin and he wrote and recorded a piece. When he was back in Australia he was asked to attend an interview with the ABC and, having almost forgotten about the competition, was very pleased when Derek Guille informed him that he had won.

“It's nice to know I got the style right,” said Schauble. “It's something that I tell my students about film scores - it's very important to get the 'feel' right.”
