NMIT recognised as a major centre of learning

02 Mar 2009

At the southern end of District 9790 the Northern Melbourne Institute of Tafe is a major centre of learning.

Recently executive officer Philip Javier addressed the Rotary Club of Preston on the numerous and varied subjects covered with particular emphasis on the hospitality and cooking departments at NMIT. Students are prepared for Apprenticeships, Certificates and Diplomas. For NMIT Rotary's Pride of Workmanship Awards to two of its students was a public recognition of NMIT in the community.

Wendy Temminghoff supervises all students who have any dreams of working in the kitchen. Wendy saw the Pride of Workmanship awards as a massive injection into the department as also into the lives of the two awardees. They came in a threefold package - a voucher on a shop specializing in cooking books (Books for Cooks), an engraved salmon carving knife and the Pride of Workmanship plaque designed by Rotary.

Elizabeth Contini finishes her apprenticeship course in 5 weeks to take up fulltime employment in the industry. Always arriving early on course day, Wendy demonstrated great commitment, a spectacular note-taker and immaculate in her work. As to her aspirations Elizabeth sees herself as working in a 'country' atmosphere - a small country restaurant, a B&B . . .

Sufian Talip is concluding his second year as an apprentice. Wendy predicts a great career ahead. His punctuality, commitment and attention to detail are spectacular. He is a leader and does not stand back when there is a problem to be addressed.

For the District it was a great occasion. The presentations highlighted the various aspects of the Avenue of Vocational Service both for Rotarians and for those seeking to enter a particular trade.
