NMIT Equine Stud Management graduates create great first impression with industry

25 Mar 2013

NMIT equine graduates are building an impressive industry reputation, with three former students receiving job offers at one of Australia's most established stud farms. Shannon Jelic and Chloe Jones, who both graduated from NMIT's Diploma of Equine Stud Management last year, were offered fulltime employment at Widden Stud, NSW, when they finished a 12 week work placement earlier this year. Last year, NMIT graduate Henry Von Doussa was also offered a job at the stud, which is famous for champion sires like Marscay, Vain, Bletchingly and Todman.

Widden Stud manager Derek Field described the students as great ambassadors for the course. “They have a good work ethic and they're very capable horse people. They have a good future in the industry.”

During her placement, Chloe worked with mares and foals, helping with deliveries and looking after newborn foals. “I really enjoyed it, and the previous experience I had at NMIT with foal watch really helped. We did deliveries at Northern Lodge and foal watch at Eliza Park. I wouldn't have felt confident giving injections otherwise.”

During their work placement, Chloe and Shannon also prepared yearlings for sale, attending the Magic Millions Thoroughbred Sales on the Gold Coast and the Sydney Classic Yearling Sales. “When we left they all asked us to stay. But we wanted to go home first and see how we felt because it's so far away.”

While both girls ultimately decided to return to their families in Melbourne, they did team up with Widden Stud again during March to help with the yearling sales in Melbourne. This year, Chloe is hoping to travel to the U.S to work at natural horsemanship schools. “It's about training the horses in a gentler way. It includes massage therapy and alternative therapy. My dream is to train other people's problem horses.”
