A feature of the Bachelor of Illustration course is our contact with industry, and the strength of this program is evidenced by the quality of speakers and workshop presenters we have engaged this year.
Invited presenters inform the student group of current industry trends and address issues which provide the platform for research and critical debate within the course structure.
Portion of Artwork for Yarra Edge Music Festival - Hayden Dewar, Bachelor of Illustration studentGuest Speakers Semester One guests have included: Natalie Ryan, specialist in anatomical drawing; fine artist Adam Lee and illustrator Kim Evans overseeing several drawing sessions; Dennis Tupicoff, who introduced the students to his unique talents as an internationally recognised animator and AFI Award winner; entertainer Paul McDermott, whose presentation also focused on animation, specifically the two films based on his books, which in turn have won international awards; and a workshop with local illustrator Michelle Katsouranis, titled 'the business of illustration' during skills week.
Guests this semester have included Melbourne based illustrator Dean Gorissen, who started our year off with a folio show that encompassed publishing and commercial design for a wide range of local and international clients.
Ben Johnson followed, another Melbourne illustrator who is acquiring a reputation as a notable portrait artist, having completed a number of commissions for American Rolling Stone magazine. Ben is a former student who graduated in 2002 from NMIT.
American artist Michael Broom addressed a full house, and delivered an impressive Photoshop demonstration focusing on creature design for film. Michael's impressive CV includes creature design for the recent blockbuster film, Wolverine X-Men, as well as credits for sculptor and storyboard artist for The Hulk and Alien Vs Predator.
Cameron Robbins spoke to students on installation art and creative associations with both community and corporate bodies. Cameron recently completed a major project in collaboration with the City of Port Phillip, a replication of our solar system, sculpted to scale in bronze and stainless steel and stretching round the bay from Elwood to Port Melbourne. Research and innovative practice - bringing original concepts and art into the public arena were key aspects of Cameron's presentation.
Michael Weldon, a local illustrator, recently spoke at the AGIdeas conference at Hamer Hall, and is midway through a short program within the Bachelor of Illustration, which started with an extensive presentation, and will conclude in October with a workshop. The workshop will see the completion of a brief whereby students will explore digital outcomes from traditional method concept designs. This follows Michael's method, which has seen him secure international commissions, including regular work for the New Yorker.
