Arena Magazine and Journal awards internship to Bachelor of Writing and Publishing international student

24 Aug 2010

Building on its success in placing students in industry internships, the Bachelor of Writing and Publishing is pleased to announce a new internship arrangement with Arena Magazine and Journal.

Mr Chris Beach, an international student currently studying in the Publishing Lab, has been granted a prestigious internship to complete the digitization of Arena's historical archives and contribute to the magazine's editorial operations.

Founded in 1963, Arena is well known in Australia as a publication which has made an impact on political and cultural interpretation and practice. Many of the themes the Arena group has explored over the decades relate to those raised by writers like Slavoj Žižek, Zygmunt Bauman and Richard Sennett, and writers associated with the Frankfurt School.

"I'm incredibly fortunate to obtain this position working closely with Senior Editor of Arena, Alison Caddick, who is extremely kind and knowledgeable," said Chris, who will begin his internship in Fitzroy next week.

"We're delighted for Chris to have this chance to put his technical savvy into practice to help bring an established Australian publication more integrally online," said Dr Sigi Jottkandt, Lecturer in the Publishing stream. "It's a terrific opportunity for both," added Head of Programme, Dr Karen Simpson Nikakis. "We're looking forward to working closely with the Arena group to meet current and future needs."

Since its first intake in 2009, NMIT's Bachelor of Writing and Publishing has rapidly developed a reputation for excellence and innovation in research and teaching. Adding to the programme's industry-acclaimed undergraduate degree, the new Publishing Lab was established in 2010 by Mr Paul Ashton, Coordinator of Publishing, to research and develop emergent publishing platforms.
