Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) will introduce three new, specialist associate degrees in International Business, International Business Management and Accounting in 2008 which will provide pathways for further study at university in bachelor degrees or post-graduate education.
The NMIT degrees are accredited by the Victorian Government and provide an academic program with an intensive practical component that is distinctive from other courses in these disciplines. They have been developed in consultation with industry, government agencies, professional bodies and universities to meet contemporary industry and government needs.
The degrees provide a Higher Education professional qualification at the end of two years. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in managing business operations, both locally and internationally.
The degrees also offer opportunities for students to gain a range of qualifications from Vocational Education & Training (VET) programs through to university in different fields. For example, a student with a VET Advanced Diploma in International Business could study an Associate Degree in International Business Management and continue on to a Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resources Management.
The Associate Degrees can also provide a transition from VET training to Higher Education programs. Students initially studying in the VET sector could obtain three qualifications such as a Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma over two years and then progress to the second-year of the Associate Degree. With these qualifications, they could advance to university obtaining two years credit towards a bachelor degree. Within four years of study, they would have obtained five industry-recognised qualifications.
The Associate Degrees include industry placements so that students can understand the close relationship between theory and practice in business, while developing abilities to undertake applied research with a focus on the commercial applications of that research.
With more than a decade offering training programs in commerce, NMIT will offer students in the Associate Degree courses small classes and individual attention in a supportive environment, with experienced academics who have a background in commerce.
The development of employment skills are integrated into the teaching, learning and assessment so students are work ready at the completion of the courses.
NMIT has also developed industry links, both nationally and internationally as well as locally, in the northern region of Melbourne which could lead to enhanced employment opportunities.
John Grech, of NMIT's Faculty of Business, said the degrees would enable graduates to work within a number of industry sectors such as manufacturing, education, international trade, marketing, finance, retail, hospitality & tourism, arts and entertainment and small business.
The Associate Degree qualification in Accounting can lead to membership of the National Institute of Accountants and CPA Australia.
