06 Sep 2012

The 2012 NMIT Yarra Edge Music Festival features five days of great quality student performances, program showcases, a songwriting competition plus a special performance by renowned Australian singer-songwriter, Lior.

The Yarra Edge Music Festival, provides NMIT (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) performing arts students with valuable opportunities to perform in public while students and the public get to watch some amazing new music for free!

This year's Festival will run from Monday 17 to Friday 21 September at NMIT's Fairfield campus.

The festival, now in its fifth year, will feature original music from students studying NMIT's Bachelor Degree, Advanced Diploma and Certificate programs in Music and Music Industry.

Individual Music Showcase nights from Certificate III and IV in Music Students plus NMIT's Big Band, VET in Schools and Original Bands will feature throughout the week.

A special Bachelor of Music Industry showcase evening will feature many original songs written as part of the degree program while a Bachelor of Music showcase will feature an eclectic presentation of student performed music from around the globe including Afro-Cuban, Middle Eastern and electronica.

One regular highlight of the festival is the Songwriting Competition Final. Five finalists have been chosen from across all programs of the NMIT Performing Arts and Creative Arts (Higher Education) departments and will each perform an original song. The audience will participate in choosing the winner of The People's Choice Award at the end of the matinee show and judges from the music industry will announce the ultimate winner at the end of the evening performance. The winner will receive a cash prize and access to a recording studio for a day.

The matinee and evening performances of the Songwriting Competition will include a special guest performance by Lior who will perform with a string accompaniment by NMIT Music Performance students.

Students and the public can attend all the Festival events for free except for the evening performance of the Songwriting Competition final which is by invitation only. For more information and bookings go to
