Super Thursday inspires Sarah to cross the Bass Strait

03 Aug 2012

Sarah O'Reagan had never been to Melbourne before 2010 but now she's living here and on her way to a career in film and television thanks to an NMIT Super Thursday.

While studying a film module in a graphic design course, Sarah (a long-time Hobart resident) was inspired to explore a career in film and television but didn't have a lot of television industry training options in Tasmania.

After a bit of inspired “Googling” Sarah found out that NMIT ran a well-respected Screen and Media program and, better still, an NMIT Super Thursday information session was running at the same time she was due to visit her sister in Melbourne.

Sarah made a trip across the Bass Strait and registered for a tour and information session at NMIT's Collingwood campus screen and media facility during NMIT's November 2011 Super Thursday.

During the information session she spoke with a number of NMIT screen and Media staff members including teacher, Chris Gospel. “I think Chris was quite motivating ... he's excited about it which makes you excited about it,” recalls Sarah.

Sarah's Super Thursday experience gave her enough confidence to make “the big move” to Melbourne at the start of 2012 and enrol in NMIT's Certificate IV in Screen and Media.

Having only visited Melbourne once before, Sarah admits “it was quite daunting leaving Tasmania where you know everyone” but has settled in well, has part-time work and loves her NMIT course. “It's the fact that we work and study in an actual television studio ... that's the beauty of this campus. When I started the course I wanted to be an editor but now that we've been working in the studio I want to work as a DA (Director's Assistant).”

The next NMIT Super Thursday is on Thursday 16 August at all of NMIT's metropolitan campuses. The day includes information sessions, tours and careers advice from industry experts spanning a wide selection of NMIT programs.
