The new Fitness Centre at NMIT's (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) Epping campus is proving popular with staff, students and the public alike. The centre, part of the campus's new $10.5m Epping Student Centre, features the latest cardio equipment such as treadmills and cross-trainers as well as resistance training equipment such as pin-loaded machines and free weights. The centre also has plate-loaded machines and ample space for stretching and core work.
Karen Cook, Student Services Coordinator, says new members comment on the centre's relaxed and friendly atmosphere. “People really enjoy the supportive atmosphere - and that the centre is not just open to NMIT staff and students, but the broader community as well.”
Joshua Defazio, 19, joined the Epping Fitness Centre two months ago. Joshua, an Epping local, learned about the gym through a friend studying at the campus. “I go there three or four times a week, it's good value and close to home.” Joshua also appreciates the gym's friendly staff. “They're always around to explain how to use the machines and keep an eye out to make sure you're using them correctly.” Joshua can already see the progress he's making. “I play basketball, and one of my aims was to increase my leg strength so I can start dunking. I can now grab the ring - which I never could before - so I can see my hard work's paying off.”
The Fitness Centre has helpful, qualified staff on duty at all times, including Eugene Scarpino, Sports and Fitness Officer, who has a Bachelor of Exercise Science. Eugene says he enjoys helping new members reach their fitness goals. “I think it's important to design an individual program that suits each person. We ensure new members are comfortable using all the equipment and know the correct techniques when training so they can reach their goals.”
Eugene also appreciates the centre's ambience. “I really enjoy it, we know everyone's name - it's not like one of those large commercial centres. We're always on hand to help our members, answer their questions and ensure they are training correctly.”
Memberships are available for a term, semester or a year. Membership includes a free fitness assessment, personalised program, program induction and a NMIT gym towel.
The NMIT Fitness Centre is open 10:00am - 6:00pm Monday to Thursday and 10:00am - 4:30pm Friday. It's located at Building M, Epping Campus, on the corner of Cooper Street and Dalton Road, Epping. For more information on the centre call 03 9269 1322 or email firstname.lastname@example.org .
