NMIT welcomes guitar legend Jon Damian (USA)

23 Mar 2013

Students from NMIT's (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) Fairfield campus are about to experience the teaching and playing of one of the world's great guitarists.

For 34 years, Professor Jon Damian has played a prominent role in the educational activities of the world's most successful music college - Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Mr Damian's profile includes having taught some of the biggest names in contemporary music-making on the international scene today, including Bill Frisell, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Wayne Krantz, James Valentine (Maroon 5), Mark Whitfield and Lionel Louke (Herbie Hancock).

NMIT Bachelor of Music students and teachers will participate in classes, workshops and rehearsals with Jon Damian for two weeks during semester 2. This activity will culminate in a grand finale concert on Thursday August 9, at 7pm in the Yarra Edge Music Centre.

Mr Damian will be performing world premieres of compositions for big band written by NMIT Bachelor of Music lecturers, performed alongside the cream of Melbourne's jazz scene. Student ensembles will also perform with Mr Damian.

“I very much look forward to coming to NMIT as a Visiting Scholar, and to sharing some of my ideas,” said Professor Damian. "Visiting 'Student' is a more accurate title since I will be conducting my Creative Workshop seminars in which the traditional roles of teacher and student are constantly shifting. In my workshops I fuse improvisation and compositional concepts. The resulting 'comprovisations' are created in the moment and draw inspiration from anything in the universe from alphabets to zodiacs. For workshop participants, improvisation is the ability to be in a moment and to react to that moment in an efficient manner.”
