NMIT staff and students celebrate to SAVE TAFE

23 Mar 2013

While this year's $300 million government budget cuts to the TAFE sector are forcing all Victorian TAFEs to make some tough decisions, NMIT (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) staff and students have decided it's time to celebrate TAFE and the life-changing opportunities public vocational education offers Victorians.

The celebrations will kick off at NMIT campuses next week including:

  • Fairfield 23 October
  • Preston 24 October
  • Collingwood 25 October
  • Epping 29 October
  • Greensborough 31 October
  • Heidelberg 2 November

Each campus will have its own unique range of events with activities including: live performances from NMIT student bands, free food, photo booths for happy snaps with friends, Students 4 TAFE info stands, an African drumming workshop, a belly dancing performance, soccer games, and 'human sized' Foosball. Representatives from the Australian Education Union (AEU) will also have an information stand at the Preston campus on 24 October.

“Staff and students alike are concerned about the effect of the TAFE cuts on courses and fees,” says NMIT Accounting student and Students 4 TAFE action group member, Chloe Beaton.

“For decades TAFEs have provided Victorians with access to affordable, high quality training and we want to raise awareness about how disastrous it would be if that access were no longer available … so we thought what better way than to celebrate the successes of TAFE.”
