NMIT Screen and Media Graduate Gets Pole Position with Network Ten

09 Mar 2012

Televising the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix is a huge logistical task: 40 cameras, 5.3km of track and 18 international broadcasters transmitting to their home countries. From 15 to 18 March NMIT Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media graduate Rhett Simons will undertake a short Network Ten traineeship to deliver the event to over four million people in Australia and millions more around the world.

“It's going to be fantastic,” says Rhett, a St Kilda East local who studied at NMIT's (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) Collingwood campus. “I'll get experience working as a camera assistant and in the outside broadcast van. I'm really looking forward to EVS operating as well. You have to be really on the ball to get highlights and replays to the director as fast as possible.”

NMIT's relationship with Network Ten means regular opportunities for Collingwood campus's Screen and Media students. This year NMIT Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media graduate Sam Bowron was awarded Ten's sought-after annual traineeship position. Network Ten also demonstrates their commitment to NMIT through their industry lectures to students, such as Richard Edlin's lectures on post production.

Darren Steffen from NMIT's Performing Arts Department gets great satisfaction from students developing their skills, finding what they're passionate about and then going on to find success in the industry. “This traineeship will be great for Rhett, it'll expand his understanding of the industry as he works side-by-side with professionals from all around the world. Not only will it be good for networking, it'll be a lot of fun too.”

NMIT has 20 recent graduates employed with Network Ten in roles such as broadcast graphics, stage management, lighting, studio and location camera operators, control room operations, technical support, program researchers and director's assistants.
