NMIT leads the way in 'Green Collar' training

25 Mar 2013

With projects like the state's desalination plant in Wonthaggi about to come online, demand will be high for graduates with advanced skills in water technology.

As a leading provider of plumbing training, the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) will offer a new short course next year, Sustainable Water Management for Green Plumbers.

NMIT Plumbing trade teacher Ricky Milnes, who was recently presented with a fellowship to study at the UNESCO Water Treatment Institute in the Netherlands, says the new course will offer students the most advanced training available in green plumbing techniques.

NMIT will be the first Victorian TAFE to offer the course, which is designed to give students an overview of the theoretical and practical aspects of advanced water technology for surface water treatment. Established plumbers and factory engineers will be eligible to enrol in the short course, which can be completed part-time.

Milnes says developing these new skills in Victoria will have important implications for Melbourne's potable water supply, helping to reduce industry usage.

"At the moment about 24 per cent of Melbourne's potable water is used in industry to cool and wash machinery, before being dumped in a sewer," he says.

"We want our students to have the skills and knowledge to specialise in this area."

The course will be delivered in the new Green Skills Centre of Excellence due for completion at NMIT's Epping campus by the end of June next year. The building will house courses related to new “green collar jobs” such as green plumbing, sustainable farming, waste management and renewable energy.

Milnes was made a Fellow of the International Specialised Skills Institute last month. The fellowship was presented by Sir James Gobbo from The Pratt Foundation.
