NMIT launches Breakfast Club with support of local Bendigo Bank branch

23 May 2011

Young teenagers studying at NMIT's Technical Education Centre can benefit from a free healthy breakfast before class, thanks to the support of Bendigo Bank in Preston.

The breakfast club was piloted last year by NMIT's (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) Youth Unit when staff noticed many students were coming to class without breakfast. It was so successful and popular with students that NMIT sought to fund the program for another year.

The breakfast club will run three mornings a week at the institute's Heidelberg campus, where most students are aged between 15 and 18. Thanks to a $1,000 cheque from Bendigo Bank, NMIT will provide up to 60 students a week with coffee, tea, milo, toast, cereal, milk and fruit juice before class each day.

Head of NMIT's Youth Unit, Anne Haynes, says many of the centre's young students miss out on a healthy breakfast. In some cases students have a long commute, while others are young migrants who live alone and don't have much money.

“Now they can come in and have some food before classes start. For many, it helps them to organise their day and they are more focussed during classes as a result.”

Bendigo Bank Preston, Customer Relationship Officer, Diana Dusenjko says the breakfast club is a good opportunity to develop relationships in the community, particularly with young people.

“We strongly believe in supporting the local community and we felt the NMIT Breakfast Club was a really smart initiative. Healthier minds create a healthier community.”

As part of the program, Bendigo Bank staff will offer finance workshops to young students at NMIT, including advice on savings plans, budgeting tips and financial planning.
