New wireless network gives more access to skills

09 Nov 2010

Students and staff at NMIT will be able to 'unplug' from tomorrow as the Institute launches its wireless network.

The launch marks the rollout of wireless technology across NMIT's seven campuses and six training centres and frees NMIT students and staff from the need to be in networked classrooms or computer laboratories.

The $5.4M wireless project was funded through the Federal Government's Teaching and Learning Capital Fund (TLCF) for Better TAFE Facilities (BTF) program and facilitated through Skills Victoria with the aim of creating a highly collaborative and flexible learning environment. NMIT was one of 14 Victorian TAFEs to receive funding through the program.

NMIT engaged Optus Business and its ICT subsidiary, Alphawest, to build its Wi-Fi network using the latest in 802.11n technologies and an enhanced security platform delivered by Alphawest and Cisco Systems.

“As the prevalence of mobile devices increases, our students and staff will be able to access institute resources and the Internet where and when it is most convenient to them. Our new Wi-Fi network, called wifi@nmit, unlocks huge potential for more flexible and innovative approaches to teaching and learning. It supplements the existing growth in virtual learning environments hosted at NMIT itself and also within the very fast TAFE Broadband Hub shared across all TAFEs“, says NMIT Chief Information Officer, Rob Hagan.

Staff and students using NMIT owned mobile devices such as notebook computers, iPads and smart phones already have access to the wireless network while those using their own devices will have access from the start of 2011.
