New NMIT Art Coming to Northcote Gallery

20 Jul 2010

Emerging artists get ready for the toughest of tests

It's one of the scariest times in an artist's life, the moment of truth when his or her skills, inspiration, rationale and (sometimes) sanity are put under the microscope - it's the public exhibition.

A group of emerging artists from NMIT (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) will soon experience the exhilaration and anxiety that comes with presenting their work in a public space at SHOWCASE, group exhibition of work by aspiring painters, printmakers, designers and photographers from NMIT's Visual Arts program.

NMIT has one of Australia's largest TAFE art departments and encourages its students to connect with the public as much as possible and gain valuable experience in presenting their work.

NMIT Art teacher and SHOWCASE Curator, Kirsten Perry, says "the exhibition will give the students experience in putting their work before the public eye. It's a challenging experience having your art put up in a public place. It's a necessary step in growing as a visual artist but it's rewarding and gives you a sense of pride".

What: SHOWCASE - an exhibition by emerging artists from NMIT
Where: Synergy Gallery, 253 High Street Northcote
When: 2 to 15 August (gallery open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am - 4pm)
Cost: Free
