04 Nov 2010

NMIT will launch its new $9.5 million Green Skills Centre next Wednesday at its Epping campus.

As the imperative to move to a green economy becomes more pressing, the new federally funded Green Skills Centre will help meet this challenge by re-training and up-skilling people currently working in industry as well as providing job seekers with the latest training in environmentally sustainable practices and technologies.

The new Centre will provide learning and skills development in environmentally sustainable practices and technologies including carbon trading, solar power and water heating, wind power generation, geothermal exchange heating and cooling, black and grey water treatment, rainwater harvesting, waste management and recycling, water resource management for horticulture, and agricultural and horticultural land conservation.

The 2,800 square metre centre embodies the skills and technology that will be taught within its walls including: energy efficient building design; renewable energy sources; water harvesting and recycling; green concrete (low cement content); and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) timber. Approximately 80% of all building waste generated by the project was recycled.

The Launch will be attended by Federal and State parliamentarians including the federal member for Scullin and Speaker of the House of Representatives - Harry Jenkins MP and Victorian member for Mill Park and Minister for Community Development - Lily D'Ambrosio MP; local council representatives; industry steering groups and union representatives among others.
