Industry Networking Forum for Overseas Qualified Professionals

30 May 2007

Skilled migrants cannot always access employment opportunities in Australia because of a different workplace culture and practices in this country.

For more than a decade, Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) has run training programs for overseas qualified professionals to impart information to skilled migrants about how to enhance their knowledge and expertise for an Australian workplace.

NMIT was awarded a contract to provide training and employment support services for the Victorian Government's Overseas Qualified Professionals Program in 2004, and is holding an industry forum on Wednesday 6 June to discuss career and employment options for skilled migrants.

The forum is being staged at the head office of the Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) at Level 5, Industry House, 486 Albert St, Melbourne between 4.15-7pm.

Panellists include a range of professional recruiters, employers, HR managers and overseas qualified professionals who've successfully found employment in their profession.

Topics for discussion include who are getting the advertised jobs and why, where can I find job vacancies, it is worth approaching recruiting agencies and how can I overcome barriers to getting a professional job.

The forum will provide opportunities for networking with industry professionals for skilled migrants in a range of professions.

NMIT's 10-week OQP training program caters for skilled migrants from around the world and provides an introduction to Australian workplace culture, cross-cultural communication skills and management concepts. It also includes industry placements.
