Besides delivering lectures and teaching, Higher Education academic staff at NMIT are also engaged in research and collaboration activities.
Some of the outside activities include presenting refereed papers at international conferences, attending international arts festivals or music workshops, as guest speakers for graduation events or engaging in negotiations for exchange programs and other cooperative programs enhancing the education experience for NMIT degree students.

Dr Charlotte Brack - Senior Lecturer (Flexible Learning) - is presenting a paper at Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australia, Sydney, July 2011.
Invited International Performances and Music Consultations
Academic Collaboration with California Polytechnic State University
Subsequent to Dr Christine Spratt's visit in October 2011, Dr Karen Simpson Nikakis (HOP Bachelor of Writing and Publishing) is meeting with the Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and CalPoly College of Arts Executive in April to begin discussions regarding student exchange programs and other potential academic research and teaching and learning cooperation.
NMIT and California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) have a history of contact and engagement between academic staff between the two organisations. In 2009 Cal Poly's Animal Science Head Dr Andrew Thulin visited NMIT to inspect the aquaculture, equine, farm, and hospitality facilities and engage with NMIT staff.
Invited Speaker - Graduation Address
Dr Christine Spratt, who is Deputy Director Programs Higher Education at NMIT, has been invited by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ballarat Professor David Battersby to give the Graduation Address at the University's School of Nursing on May 6th 2011.
