Distinguished Aquaculture academic visits Victoria

Aquaculture expert Dr. Don Furnell knows fish inside out - literally.

Dr. Furnell is the Chair, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, Vancouver Island University in Canada, and has a diverse background including work as a polar bear biologist, fish population biologist and fish metabolic physiologist.

He will be visiting Melbourne in August to deliver a series of lectures and workshops to Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) students

During his career, he has held the position of Vice-President - Operations for Hagensborg Marine Farms, a large publicly traded salmon aquaculture company and has consulted to the aquaculture industry, the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission, the International Development Research Centre, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans among other organizations.

His current research interests include fish reproductive endocrinology, breeding and rearing a diversity of fish species, sex chromosome manipulation in fish and simulation modelling of fish production systems.

At Vancouver Island University, Dr. Furnell teaches the finfish aquaculture courses and fish population dynamics to degree and diploma students as well as being involved in several project courses involving fish rearing.

NMIT students will get the benefit of his knowledge of subjects such as Reproduction and Genetics of Aquatic Animals, Practical Freshwater Finfish Aquaculture and Practical Marine Fish and Salmonid Aquaculture.

Dr. Furnell will also visit a number of key industry establishments including the Department of Primary Industries hatchery at Snobs Creek, trout farms in the Goulburn Valley and Eildon regions, and mainstream aquaculture operations.
