AFL legends teamup with top local chefs for Celebrity Cook off

21 Nov 2009

The gloves are off and the aprons are on! After hosting the recent Master Chef auditions at its Preston campus, Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) is shaping up for its own culinary showdown … with the Chefs at Rydges Bell City.

With the help of a few former and current AFL legends, NMIT and Bell City will battle it out in a Celebrity Cook Off at Preston Market.

The two day event features expert cooking demonstrations by the Chefs from NMIT's Hospitality Department and Bell City followed by a Cook Off challenge on each day.

Both the Bell City and NMIT teams will enlist the help of an AFL footballer or former AFL legend. Each AFL star will be given $20, a shopping list and a time limit to go shopping at the market. The footballers then return with the ingredients and then the siren sounds for the start of some great kitchen 'biffo'.

The pressure is on with each team required to produce an entré, main and desert and there's loads of fun and craziness along the way. The public also get to join in on the fun as the judges are selected from the crowd.

“There's always a bit of rivalry between the NMIT and Bell City Chefs during the Cook Off,” says Chef and NMIT Hospitality teacher, Hamish Rodwell. “But it's all in good fun and it's really funny to watch the footballers - their kitchen skills aren't quite as sharp as their football skills but they still kick goals when it comes to having a go. Dougie Hawkins really brings it all together for some great laughs.”

This fun event is a great opportunity to watch the very skilled chefs from NMIT and Bell City in action, learn about preparing fast, healthy, tasty and inexpensive food and to see if your favourite AFL stars can stand the heat in the kitchen.

The whole event is hosted by former AFL legend Doug Hawkins and the celebrity kitchen hands include Anthony Koutoufides (former Carlton Champion) and Bryce Gibbs (Carlton). Former AFL legend, Martin Pike (North Melbourne, Fitzroy, Brisbane Lions and Melbourne), has also been drafted for the Cook Off. Pike, a four-time AFL premiership player and Northern Bullants Reserves Coach is joined by local legend, David Teague (Northern Bullants Senior Coach).
